What is TMJ ? How Does It Cause Headaches?

One of the most common symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ/TMD) is painful headaches. These headaches can be difficult to diagnose, as they’re often caused by a combination of factors, and they often overlap with other types of headaches. TMJ-related headaches tend to start at the jaw or temporomandibular joint.

Your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) acts like a sliding hinge, connecting your jawbone to your skull. You have one joint on each side of your jaw. TMJ disorders — a type of temporomandibular disorder or TMD — can cause pain in your jaw joint and in the muscles that control jaw movement.

When you chew food or clench your teeth, the TMJ moves back and forth just like a hinge would move if you swung open a door. When something goes wrong with this joint, it can cause pain and problems with chewing, opening and closing your mouth, talking and even breathing.

If you grind your teeth, you might be suffering from TMJ.

TMJ Headache Treatment
